WELCOME TO PRELO

WELCOME

Prelo Prints – or simply Prelo* – is a project born from the love for letterpress and all forms of early print, its techniques, and history. On this website, we keep a record of our projects related to letterpress and the history of printing.

Letterpress was the common form of printing since the mid-15th century when Johannes Gutenberg developed the moveable type. For centuries this craft remained almost unchanged until offset printing took up the main role in the industry in the 20th century. With this project, we aim to keep the craft of letterpress alive and to demonstrate printing as it was made towards the end of 15th-century Europe.

*Prelo (from the Latin prelum) is an old Portuguese term for the printing press.
